Tasting Notes: Colour: Light straw Taste: Citrus and minerals Body: Dry and light Finish: Mineral.
Recommended food pairings: A crostini with a refreshing topping such as queijo fresco (fresh cheese in Portugal) and grilled peach with a drizzle of honey is the perfect balance against the crisp aftertaste experienced from the Garcia sparkling wine.
The First Winemaker
In 1936, a French winemaker named Eugène Hellis arrived at Quinta da Aveleda. He was coming from the Douro by train and, when passing by the Guedes family property, decided to stop to speak to the owner, Roberto Guedes, the third generation of the family. The winemaker was surprised by the way the vineyards were planted and even more surprised when he was told that each plot had a different grape variety.
The Region
The Vinho Verde Demarcated Region extends across the entire northwest of Portugal, in the area traditionally known as Entre-Douro-e-Minho. It is bordered to the north by the Minho River and to the south by the Douro River and is surrounded by several mountain ranges. It is often referred to as an amphitheatre facing the Atlantic Ocean. In terms of geographical area, it is the largest Portuguese Demarcated Region and one of the largest in Europe.
This Atlantic influence, the soils mostly of granite origin, the mild climate and the high rainfall, translate into the freshness, lightness and elegance of the wines from this region. The natural conditions of this Region are ideal for the production of excellent white wines, as well as sparkling wines and brandies due to their fruity and fresh aromatic character, low alcohol content and high acidity.
